Sky Studios Elstree is a new, state-of-the-art film and TV studio based in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. With 13 sound stages set across 27.5 acres, our world-class studio will become home to a range of productions from across the world when it opens.
Developed by Legal & General, in partnership with Sky and sister company NBCUniversal, we have spent the last two years learning about local priorities and it’s clear that investing in infrastructure, amenities and the next generation of talent are all key.
As one of the biggest businesses in Hertsmere, we are committed to supporting our neighbouring community and ensuring the benefits of us being here are felt directly by residents. This means new jobs and training opportunities, but also using local suppliers, minimising our environmental impact, and supporting more initiatives, charities, and projects as a long-term partner.
Sky Studios Elstree North
As we look beyond the opening of our current 13 sound stages, we have been exploring how we can grow the studio and invest further in Elstree & Borehamwood. Across our industry, the demand for studio space remains high and looks set to stay that way. We want to continue to attract world-leading productions to the UK and we want them to be produced here, in Elstree & Borehamwood, creating more jobs and boosting the local economy.
That’s why we have submitted proposals for Sky Studios Elstree North – a 10 sound stage expansion for Sky Studios Elstree which will help support Hertsmere’s economy and the UK’s film and TV industry to thrive. The expansion is set to attract even more world class productions to Borehamwood, deliver 2,000 additional jobs locally, and house a new Sky Up Academy Studios for Hertsmere’s young talent plus space on site for community initiatives, offices, and a large wet grassland area to support new rich habitats.
The proposal:
10 NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART SOUND STAGES, operated by Sky, to house world-class film and TV productions.
More than 2,000 ADDITIONAL JOBS LOCALLY throughout construction and operation.
A dedicated SKY UP ACADEMY STUDIOS AT ELSTREE to inspire the next generation of talent.
A new SPACE FOR COMMUNITY INITIATIVES. We are setting up a community board to help ensure the final result truly benefits local people.
All the facilities and amenities that a modern studio needs including OFFICE SPACE AND WORKSHOPS.
Space for a PERMANENT BACKLOT which can serve the existing Sky Studios Elstree South site and proposed expansion.
A multi-storey CAR PARK with a living wall, reducing the traffic, parking and visual impact for residents in the surrounding area.
The proposal will enable an additional £2bn OF PRODUCTION SPEND over the first five years of operation.
A LARGE WET GRASSLAND area to support new rich habitats on site.
We’re designing the build to meet the UK Green Building Council NET ZERO CARBON standard to reduce our long-term impact on the environment.
Extending our FREE SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE adding a service to Potters Bar and Stanmore stations and opening our service to Elstree & Borehamwood station to members of the public at certain times of the day.
IMPROVEMENTS TO THE LOCAL HIGHWAY NETWORK, and contributing towards extending the cycle hire scheme as well as new crossings and cycle and pedestrian routes.
Supporting CHARITIES IN THE LOCAL AREA through our Sky Cares programme. We’d love to hear ideas from residents of who we could work with.

Over the last few months we’ve been talking to local people about these proposals, writing to nearly 17,000 households, reaching over 40,000 people through social media, and speaking directly to over 160 people over 15 hours of consultation events.
We’re really grateful to everyone who made the time to engage with us and we received lots of thoughtful feedback on the proposals and suggestions for how we can best contribute to the area. We’ve taken many of the ideas on board and incorporated them into our plans and are pleased to share that we have now submitted a planning application to Hertsmere Borough Council, Ref: 22/1526/FULEI.
